Hunting Season 2009

hunting, dog

My hunting season begins in the early fall. I am fortunate enough to live right in the heart of some of the best hunting in the world.

I have been bc hunting for 20 years now, this season was one of my best yet, and the game that was taken was all within a short distance of my home.

In the month of October I was able to fill 3 of the 4 tags that I had purchased for this hunting season.

Over my 20 years, filling tags has not been a priority, again like most of my activities, I really enjoy time spent outdoors especially involving wild life adventures, friends and family.

During the first week of hunting season, black bear was on my list, I do not usually hunt bear, however from conflicting reports about the meat they provide, I decided to try it myself.

We have lots of black bears in this area so I choose a healthy young male.

And I have to admit, the meat from this bear has proven to be very good.

The next hunt was for moose

Over my 20 years of moose hunting, this was only my 4th moose ever taken, and my first time to get one on opening day.

This animal will provide a good supply of meat for my full year.

Before I could finish with my moose, I came across a young white tail buck. This animal provides excellent meals for my grill.

As a bonus this season my step son joined me for a weekend so we got to engage in some grouse hunting, these are delicious meals.

He said that he had a great weekend, and it was his fist weekend he could remember without a game-boy or play station, or some other electronic device and he never missed them at all.

I know this seems like a lot of meat for one person and it surely would be.

Living this country life however provides an opportunity to share barter, trade etc. I have arranged for some fresh pork, range chickens, and fresh veggies for my root cellar.

I am thankful for my hunting heritage.

I won't let any of this valuable resource go to waste. These species are well managed in our area. I feel more secure knowing that I can provide when necessary and not have to worry about where my food comes from and how it is handled.
